Unfortunately, even the PicoSure Laser takes time to completely remove a tattoo. Numerous treatments may be required, over many months, to achieve optimum clearance of certain inks. Why? Because some inks are very tough, deeply hued, or both. Many inks are tweaked by manufacturers to improve their “lightfastness”. Lightfastness is the degree to which a pigment is permanent or is unaffected by exposure to light. Some of the same pigments used in tattoo inks are also used in paints and dyes. If you pick up a can of paint you can see a lightfastness rating printed right on the label. Furthermore, pigments must also be chemically and physically stable which is why manufacturers add a number of secret proprietary ingredients to ensure that their inks are tough and durable. Often these ingredients can include various metals such as titanium, chromium and iron. Some metals are highly lustrous and have the ability to reflect even laser light or they can change form and coloration during the tattoo removal process.
An experienced PicoSure provider should be able to advise you on how your particular ink is responding and what strategies may be incorporated for optimum clearance.
