Significantly fading a tattoo with the PicoSure laser, prior to getting a cover-up, allows for more choices in the new design which include the use of fine lines and the lighter colors associated with today’s tattoo styles.

Hi there….I am looking to fade a 20 year old 3″x4″ tattoo on my ankle in preparation for a cover up. In typical 90’s fashion, it has a very heavy black outline. The design consists of 2 calla lilies (white) with green leaves. My tattoo artist would like me to fade the black outline to the point that is pale grey/blue. I would like your thoughts on how many sessions I can expect to need.
Thanks for your question regarding fading an ankle tattoo for cover up. I think 2 or 3 treatments with PicoSure spaced 5-6 weeks apart should do it. Twenty year old ink was not made as tough as today’s black ink. Having said that, each patient and tattoo is different. I recommend using the PicoSure laser with Boost upgrade because it’s been shown that the photomechanical impact of PicoSure’s patented PressureWave removes ink faster than any other method while being extremely gentle on the skin. Best of luck to you. Thanks again, Brendan
