The toughest tattoo colors for the PicoSure laser to remove have historically been various shades of red. While the photomechanical PressureWave is able to break them up, the addition of more photothermal action may be required to remove some of the more resistant red inks. For those patients with red remnants of ink the answer is the newest upgrade to the PicoSure laser which is a 532nm wavelength red-targeting handpiece.
That’s right; the manufacturer (Cynosure) of the PicoSure laser has developed a new handpiece attachment that will emit a wavelength which is highly absorbed by red and orange ink creating a strong photothermal reaction. When combined with the photomechanical action of the PressureWave, this additional PicoSure upgrade will give clinicians another tool to help those patients with resistant red ink. The handpiece is currently before the FDA awaiting final approval – update: Approved and working well!
