I once read a clinical paper on laser tattoo removal which noted that tattoos appear to come off easier in certain areas of the body. The authors pointed out that tattoos on the trunk (back, chest) didn’t require as many treatments as say a tattoo on a lower extremity (leg, foot). I have also found this to be true in my practice. Some ankle tattoos can be more difficult to clear than upper back tattoos. Why? Most likely this is partially related to a circulatory issue. Remember that much of the vaporized ink is cleared through the lymphatic system. Clear fluid between the skin cells drains out through this network which is much like our cardiovascular circulatory system. However, lymph fluid is not pumped by the heart. Lymph vessels drain fluid by the compression action of our muscle tissues. The structure of the lymph system follows the design of the body into external and internal regions. Therefore, the drainage of the legs is much different than the drainage of the upper trunk. There may be more lymph flow in our upper regions above the heart than in our feet depending upon our overall health, activity level and other factors.
Regardless of this issue, the PicoSure laser is still more than capable of removing the majority of lower extremity tattoos. The location of a tattoo, along with its size, depth and color must all be factored in to the removal strategy. Starting with the best tattoo removal laser available is a great first step.
